What Examiners Actually Reward: Command Words Guide

Thousands of capable students write accurate information but score zero marks because they misunderstand the command word in the question prompt:

"STATE" or "IDENTIFY"

Give a concise factual answer with no elaboration or mathematical working required.

"DESCRIBE"

State the points of a topic or give characteristics. Do NOT give reasons; simply state what happens.

"EXPLAIN"

Set out purposes or reasons. Must show cause-and-effect relationships using "because" or "leading to".

"EVALUATE" or "DISCUSS"

Consider both sides of an argument, weigh evidence, and arrive at a supported conclusion based on context.
